In case you weren’t able to attend, here’s a quickie on some of the things we discussed at the meeting.  I’m not big on long formal meeting minutes, so if you need details, contact your favorite board member….better yet, come to the meeting.

New president Kevin Allen gave a recap of happenings in 2011

Yankee Springs Time Trial update – Registration has been open since mid-November. John Anderson is back with his sound system and announcing talents.  Dan Clark will design this year’s 2012 artwork for shirts, glasses and posters.  Youth Cycling will run our kid’s race event for 2012. Gault/RaceMgmt is back as our timing system operators.  As of January 9th we have over 100 pre-registered racers toward our cap of 700 for the 2012 race.  First committee meeting will be sometime in February.

Volunteers needed:  Yankee Springs Time Trial 4/22/12 (funds 40-50% of what we do), State Games of Michigan scheduled for 6/23/12, Trifecta mostly likely 5/20/12 but keep checking to be sure.  Give a shout out to Kevin Allen so he can get you on the volunteer list.

MMBA Annual Meeting on January 28, 2012, good opportunity to network with people from other areas, Bobby McMullen will be one of the guest speakers, CPS point series awards, Right to Ride legislator available at noon in the auditorium (hint – voice your concerns on the latest Equestrian bill), pump track – BYO bike.

Movie night – Proceeds to go 50 in 5 campaign.  Appears we have firm dates with Spring Lake at Seven Steps Up on 3/21/12 (change from the meeting), Grand Rapids at Wealthy Theater on 3/22/12.  All locations are looking to show the movie Pedal Driven.  Tickets @ $25 will include raffle entry and a drink coupon.  Look for additional information as the time approaches.

Trail updates

Shore Acres – 2.5 miles existing, pump track in the works, possible 3 additional miles of single track in the near future.

Bass River – New land manager, master plan in final approval.  Phase one involves user groups having assigned areas, phase two could follow quickly which involves detailed user plans to build trail, another 4-5 miles predicted.

Yankee Springs – Great riding this time of year, no drainage issues.  Invasive species study is going to be completed and they’ll be coming to trail days to update volunteers on what to look for.

Cannon Township – 1.2 miles of single track completed.  Great trail for beginners or another stop on the Tri(quad)fecta?

Ionia – New Adopt a Trail program (see MMBA site for article).  Proposal to DNR for 3 new miles of trail.  New land manager, some delays while we get to know each other.

Hardy Dam – lots of land, lots of potential trail, lots of bridges going to be needed.

Owasippe– Trail assessment report received which suggests by-passing some bridge replacement costs by re-routing the trail around a small lake, would lead to 2 miles of new trail.  Working on reduction of grades to prevent erosion and repairing sections of old trail to the natural state.  Received a grant from Alcoa for trail restoration and working on some additional grant proposals.  Meeting with OOEC for approval.  Goal is 50 miles! Watch for IMBA trail care crew planned for this summer. Request from the crowd to formalize schedule for riding (and seconded).

Upper Mac – .5 miles of trail was flagged by halted by the DEQ for some final approval discussion.  No major concerns about not being able to build trail.  Will likely be able to begin flagging again in April.

10 Mile/Plainfield Township – 5-6 miles of trail flagged & cleared.  Most will need bench cutting.  Will need to build about 4-6 bridges to navigate ravines.  Approval for temporary parking area but demand may exceed supply until more of the sports complex is developed.  Hoping for connector to the White Pine Trail.

Wahlfield – Hoping for 4 miles of trail at this County park near 8 Mile/Alpine.  Matt Gossman will be the TC.

Doug and Dan gave an overview of the happenings at the Thrifty Acres Indoor BMX.  Inaugeral race for Inside Out Cyclocross on 1/8/12 was enjoyed by many.  Two more upcoming races on Feb12 and March 11.  Check out on their FB page at Inside-out cyclocross or online at http://www.taibmx.com/ In addition, they discussed “Four Cross” racing which is BMX style heats for MTB.  Open for riding Tuesdays 6-10 pm and Fridays 6-11 PM.  At this point full-face helmets are required, some loaners available.
