Troy Carr WMMBA President

Well, well, well, 2018 has come and gone! We begin with a fresh start and all the promise of a new year!  I hope you all had a wonderful previous 365 days filled with two-wheeled adventure and are as eager as we are to get 2019 underway.

We have some new things coming our way for the WMMBA this year.  As some of you may know, we have made a commitment to hitting 2019 with a fresh outlook and different objectives, and those efforts fall across many areas. One thing we have focused on is bringing in new voices and new faces to our organizations. The WMMBA board has been working hard on getting fresh board members and fostering some changes in leadership.  First off, a many thanks to Kevin Allen, who has served as the WMMBA Chapter president for the last 7 years.  That’s a huge sacrifice and a lot of time in leading this great community.  Kevin is not stepping away completely, and we wouldn’t let him!  He’ll be mentoring and lending advice to me as I move into the president’s position on our board.  I am greatly appreciative of all his help and consultation over the last 6 months as we make this move. I feel honored to step into a role that has been handled by some great people that are passionate about building and maintaining trails in West Michigan and around Grand Rapids.  It’s a role previously held by legends like Rick Plite, Martin Hall, John Haffenden, Nate Phelps, and Dennis Murphy.   There is a long history of good leadership to lean on as we move forward in the coming year.  The mission is still there, and I support and share that passion for our trails with them.

I step into a position of helping a diverse board of people move forward with growing our membership.  Without the help of Julie Whalen, Doug Huyser, Doug Kyle, Brian Zajac, Jill Martindale, and John Haffenden, this is a daunting task. At the same time, we have brought on Lydia Fotis-Sweetman as a new board member. With their help, we can continue to grow as a community and bring more people into this great lifestyle.

Opportunities abound for others to get involved in 2019.  We will have positions open as current board members time expires this year.  If this is something you are interested in exploring, please reach out to me and let’s talk. There is so much more to running great trails than picking up sticks. No matter what skills you bring to the table, or how much time you have available to you, there’s a way to help. Even committing to telling one friend per week to join the Alliance can make a big difference in our mission!  There is plenty of fun to be had, hard work to do, and great trails to build, and we need your help as a community to do it.

Thank you for all your support over the last few years!  We are very lucky to have so many great people to help us carry out our mission of building and maintaining more great trails.  I will want and need your input going forward.  Please feel free to reach out to me anytime on Messenger, Facebook or Instagram.

Look for more updates throughout the year!
